Is a Multi-Level Marketing business the same as a Pyramid Scheme?

So I have started a new adventure and I'm not going to lie, it's been fun, and scary, and frustrating and rewarding...and I've only been doing it a month!

There are some questions I had to ask before I decided to commit, and I'm glad I did.  The company I joined, as a Distributor is Younique, which is a multi level marketing company.  So, for those that don't know what that means, it's basically a company that makes cosmetics and skin care products, they sell them to me then pay me a commission to sell them to others.  That's it.  So what makes it a multi level marketing company?  I have the option to add new distributors to my team.  So, once I make a certain level within the company (Pink - which is the 3rd level), I can make a small commission off of what they make as well.

So what is the difference between that and a pyramid scheme?  They sound the same.  There is a huge difference...

**The Federal trade Commission (FTC) has set guidelines that help consumers discern legitimate plans from illegal ones. The difference between MLM and pyramid schemes under these guidelines are as follows: Sales of actual product or services to consumers, MLM offers products whereas Pyramid schemes do not.**

So, as you can see, MLM's are legitimate ways to earn money. Younique is a MLM that has allowed me to become my own boss. This company allows you to build and work your business in the way you see fit. I'll post more on the business and the company in the next post, but for now, you know the difference.
